Essential Oil Quality

Quality and purity of genuine essential oils are important for their use as a healing therapy.

Quality is determined by analyzing the chemical composition of the essential oil.

Each plant variety will have a unique chemical composition of various components.

Component ratios for the plant may differ affecting quality.

Variation in component ratios depend on growing region, climate, time of harvest,

distillation, storage and distribution. While quality may vary depending on these factors

the chemical composition does not.

Each essential oils has a unique chemical composition and should be distilled from only

one plant variety identified with its scientific (latin) name. The chemical composition

determines the pharmacological and healing effects of the essential oil.

You are using Eucalyptus. There are hundreds of Eucalyptus plant varieties in the world.

The scientific (latin) name of the plant helps you determine exactly what you are using.

Eucalyptus citriodora is chemically (contains aldehydes) and therapeutically (sedative)

different then using Eucalyptus radiata (contais terpene alcohol) and is used as an antiviral

for upper respiratory tract issues.

Purity means it hasn't been modified with other materials. Cutting with natural

or synthetic ingredients changes chemical composition and purity. Diluting may have occurred.

How do you know if the essential oil you are using is a quality product? Unfortunately

standards for quality do not exist. What can you do?

Read the label, (does it have the scientific name)?

Does it say 100% pure (latin name) essential oil?

Is it organic?

Does it provide country of origin?

Is the essential oil supplier reputable?

Do they provide the chemical composition for the essential oil that they are trying to sell you?

What is the cost? Pure essential oils tend to cost more.

Compare brands to see if the price is too low then the purity is usually compromised.

Consult a certified aromatherapist.
